ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), created by a small research team at the head of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the United States Department of Defense, was the world's first operational packet switching network, and the predecessor of the contemporary global Internet. The packet switching of the ARPANET was based on designs by Lawrence Roberts, of the Lincoln Laboratory. Packet switching, now the dominant basis for data communications worldwide, then was a new and important concept. Data communications had been based upon the idea of circuit switching, as in the old, typical telephone circuit, wherein a dedicated circuit is occupied for the duration of the telephone call, and communication is possible only with the single party at the far end of the circuit. With packet switching, a data system could use one communications link to communicate with more than one machine by disassembling data into datagrams, then gather these as packets. Thus, not only could the link be shared (much as a single post box can be used to post letters to different destinations), but each packet could be routed independently of other packets. GNU Free Documentation License Does the Arpanet still exist? Q. Okay before the days of the internet we have today. There was a military computer network back in the 60's and 70's called the Arpanet. I was wondering if it still exists and if it does, do they still use it for anything? Asked by Free Thinker - Fri Feb 6 08:47:59 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. A quote from Wikipedia: "The original IMPs and TIPs were phased out as the ARPANET was shut down after the introduction of the NSFNet, but some IMPs remained in service as late as 1989." but its spirit is still alive, the ARPANET was a foundation of what we currently know as Internet. Back in the days, network at the most consist of several hundreds or thousands of computers, so shutting down the whole network is still possible. I'm not sure our current Internet could, someday, be shut down and replaced by something better, faster, and mightier. The current technology (OSI model) was designed so network replacement can be phased in and be compatible with the older network. Heck, some people even implemented a network that uses Courier… [cont.] Answered by Lie Ryan - Fri Feb 6 08:55:37 2009 Good techno / electro recommendations.? Q. The precursor to the Internet, ARPANET was a large wide-area network created by the United States Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA). Established in 1969, ARPANET served as a testbed for new networking technologies, linking many universities and research centers. The first two nodes that formed the ARPANET were UCLA and the Stanford Research Institute, followed shortly thereafter by the University of Utah. 2.Search Engine is defined as a program on the internet that searches for keywords in files and documents found on the World Wide Web 3FTP (disambiguation) The abbreviation FTP can refer to: The File Transfer Protocol used on the Internet 4 An Internet address (for example, usually consisting of the access protocol (ht [cont.] Answered by landkm - Mon Aug 21 14:25:11 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "arpanet" The Phone Of The Future as predicted in 1956 - MobileShop.com (blog)
