Mac OS is the trademark-protected name for a series of graphical user interface-based operating systems developed by Apple Inc. (formerly Apple Computer, Inc.) for their Macintosh line of computer systems. The Macintosh user experience is credited with popularizing the graphical user interface. The original form of what Apple would later name the "Mac OS" was the integral and unnamed system software first introduced in 1984 with the original Macintosh, usually referred to simply as the System software.

Apple deliberately downplayed the existence of the operating system in the early years of the Macintosh to help make the machine appear more user-friendly and to distance it from other operating systems such as MS-DOS, which was more arcane and technically challenging. Much of this early system software was held in ROM, with updates typically provided free of charge by Apple dealers on floppy disk. As increasing disk storage capacity and performance gradually eliminated the need for storing much of the advanced GUI operating system in the ROM, Apple explored clones while positioning major operating system upgrades as separate revenue-generating products, first with System 7.1 and System 7.5, then with Mac OS 7.6 in 1997.

Early versions of the Mac OS were compatible only with Motorola 68000-based Macintoshes. As Apple introduced computers with PowerPC hardware, the OS was upgraded to support this architecture as well. Mac OS 8.1 was the last version that could run on a 68000-class processor (the 68040). Mac OS X, which has superseded the "Classic" Mac OS, is compatible with both PowerPC and Intel processors through version 10.5 ("Leopard"). Version 10.6 ("Snow Leopard") supports only Intel processors.

What is the purpose of the Mac OS X Development Kit?
Q. I'm just curious, is it a programming compiler/IDE that supports many languages. If so, how many languages does it support? In case your not familiar with it, look in your Mac HD or the OS X disc that came with your Mac.

A. It's just an IDE that has a GUI designer for OS X applications (like Visual Studio). It uses GCC (GNU C Compiler / Compiler Collection) for nearly all compilations, which supports many languages like C, C++, Objective-C and Fortran. That's all you would really write a large app in anyway.

What is a good application for designing a MySQL-driven website on Mac OS X?
Q. I am developing a web site that allows users to search for information stored in a MySQL database on a Mac. I am looking for an application to assist in the design of the web site, allowing me to create search forms to retrieve the data from a MySQL database on a Mac OS X computer. I do not want to outsource this task or to have another company host it. Any suggestions and/or advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

A. I personally use Coda, by panic for my web programming. I also highly recommend it over Dreamweaver.

What is the best protection for Mac OS X? What free firewall should I use and free spyware?
Q. I don't know what free firewall and spyware program to download for my Mac OS X (version 10.3.9) anyone have ideas? Help is greatly appreciated!

A. There's a built in firewall. You normally don't need extras! For spyware to infect you, you would have to download the spyware and explicitly run it! Then to infect the system you would have to type in your password!! You normally don't need any protection, but the firewall is nice, if you connect directly to the 'net without a router.
